Lymphoma due to breast implants?

Breast Implant Associated – Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is currently the only complication of breast implants for which a causal relationship is likely. The risk of BIA-ALCL is about 1 in 3000 for macrotextured breast implants. While there is no evidence for other long-term complications, there is no evidence either that there are none. Worldwide recording of data on medical devices, for which the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists has provided a clear impetus, would offer greater opportunities for research into complications. In addition, the legislation concerning market authorization in the EU will be adjusted as of May 2020. Requirements for clinical evidence, especially post-marketing surveillance, have been tightened.

  • Breast Implant Associated – Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is rare, but based on the Bradford-Hill criteria it is plausible that there is a causal relationship between breast implants (with macrotextured surface) and this specific lymphoma.
  • So far, the registration of adverse effects or complications of medical devices (including breast implants) has proved to be inadequate, which is one of the causes of the lack of sufficient high-quality research.
